JOHN P. HART

Dialogues In Democracy

Dialogues in Democracy: Building a Better Future Through Civil Conversation

In a time when political debates often generate more heat than light, John P. Hart offers a refreshing and hopeful alternative. Based in Fort Lauderdale, Hart has devoted more than two decades to public service, including three terms as mayor of the City of North Lauderdale and service as a leader in Broward County government. Throughout his career, he discovered one powerful truth: meaningful progress only happens when people are willing to listen, collaborate, and work toward common ground.

That insight became the inspiration for Dialogues in Democracy, a forum dedicated to thoughtful, fact-based discussions about the most important issues facing our communities, our state, and our nation. Hart learned that the best ideas are rarely perfect at the start. Through respectful debate and honest conversation, proposals evolve, improve, and ultimately become stronger. Collaboration, he found, is not a weakness—it is the very foundation of effective leadership.

The Dialogues in Democracy forums bring together people from across the political spectrum—Democrats, Republicans, Independents, liberals, and conservatives—to discuss challenging topics with openness and respect. Participants receive the discussion topic in advance and agree to three simple but powerful ground rules: be civil, base arguments on facts rather than hearsay, and be willing to embrace compromise when it serves the greater good.

The first Dialogue was held in 2002, in the wake of the September 11 attacks. Hart observed a surge of patriotism across America, but he also saw how quickly that spirit faded as daily life resumed. He realized that democracy requires more than moments of passion—it demands sustained engagement, informed discussion, and a continuing commitment to our shared values.

Today, Hart is focused on inspiring what he calls “young minds”—people of any age who are curious, open-minded, and eager to strengthen our democracy. Through Dialogues in Democracy, he seeks to plant seeds of civic responsibility and encourage thoughtful discussions on issues such as climate change, racial justice, equality, and the preservation of liberty. John Hart believes that civility is the steel in democracy’s spine. When we listen more than we speak, respect those with different viewpoints, and seek solutions that benefit the common good, we move closer to the vision of a more perfect union. Dialogues in Democracy is more than a conversation series—it is a call to action, inviting each of us to become better stewards of our nation and leave a stronger legacy for generations to come.
